The Life Blood of Your Company: Data Backups
Data Backups and Recovery
Almost everything you need when it comes to your business can be found in the data that you have created since the beginning. This Asset is the Life Blood of Your Company. That said, if a business was to lose all that data whether it’s from a natural disaster, hackers, or some type of ransomware, this can decimate a business. Making sure you have a solid backup and recovery system put into place and updated should always be a key component of your IT services. We take a layered approach to Secure your company!
So, what is Backup and Recovery? Breaking this up into two parts, a backup is the process where you save, protect, and store your data. Recovery is the process in which your backed up data is retrieved and restored to your systems.
There are 3 main types of Backups: full Backups, incremental backups, and differential backups. Helping Hand uses a full to incremental backup strategy. An example of this is that a full backup runs on the first of every month. This backup creates a fully recoverable image of the server or computer. For the remaining days in the month, an incremental is run backing up whatever has changed from the first full. This incremental backup can be run once per day or on an hourly schedule for your most mission critical data.
Recovery of the data is available via the following methods:
- File Based Recovery: This is used to quickly regain access to specific files without needing to restore the entire server or computer.
- Volume Recovery: A volume recovery can be used in the event of a catastrophic failure of a hard drive, where a computer is down, and the operating system hard drive or data drive needs to be recovered completely.
- Bare Metal Recovery: This type of recovery is helpful if a computer or server fails completely, and your backup needs to be recovered to a different model of hardware.
- Instant VM Recovery: This type of recovery is only available in VMWare or Hyper-V environments. If a virtual machine fails or needs to be completely recovered, Helping Hand is able to live boot the virtual machine from a backup, so all data is accessible as it recovers, greatly minimizing downtime.
Since data is important no matter what type of business you are in, making sure everything is protected is paramount. Today, threats to data, are on a rise. Making sure you have a trustworthy solution that will help your business survive should be top priority. The average cost of a data breach has increased over the past year. From 2021 to 2022, it has gone up 2.6%. By taking precautions with a reliable backup strategy and being aware of new threats, you can make sure your business data is protected.
